Many people who take the IELTS exam do not know which one to take, so there is a never-ending confusion about the IELTS Academic and IELTS General exams. Here in this article you should know what is the difference between IELTS General and IELTS Academic task.

If you want to do this for admission to an English-speaking university or for professional registration, then you will need to take the IELTS Academic. If you want to do this for migration purposes, you will need to take the IELTS General test.

Difference between IELTS General and IELTS Academic

Most test takers don’t know which IELTS exam they need! IELTS coaching in Jaipur has prepared more than 1.5 million students for various English proficiency exams, and we can’t give students better advice than spending their time getting acquainted with the structure of the test they want to take.

Let’s separate the basics of the two IELTS types so you get a clear answer to the question: What is the difference between IELTS General and IELTS Academic?

The IELTS exam consists of 4 parts:

  • Writing ( 1 and 2)
  • Reading
  • Listen
  • Speaking

Writing Task 2, Listening and Speaking IELTS are the same for Academic and General IELTS.

Writing Task 2 – Essay. You will be asked an essay question to answer in 40 minutes by writing at least 250 words. Watch our Understanding IELTS Writing video at our IELTS coaching in Jaipur.

As a result, in the listening task, you will hear at least 4 audio recordings and have to answer in 40 questions.  So, it takes 30-40 minutes. Learn useful tips from our Understanding IELTS Listening video.

So how are IELTS Academic and General different? Answer the type of text found in the Writing and Reading section of Task 1.

Let’s differentiate: Writing Task 1

IELTS Academic

Describe and analyze the data in one of the following:

  • Bar diagram
  • Line graphics
  • Pie diagram
  • Table
  • Diagram
  • IELTS general

Write a letter in one of the following ways:

  • Official (to someone you don’t know)
  • Semi-official (to someone who knows the official)
  • Informal (for friend or family)
  • You have 20 minutes to complete the 1st Writing assignment on the tests. Also, we recommended you must write at least 100+50 words.

Let’s Differentiate IELTS Academic and IELTS General: Reading Task

IELTS Academic Reading Task

  • 3 long jumps increasing difficulty
  • Academic texts (magazine articles, textbook excerpts)
  • Texts on academic topics such as science, history, sociology

IELTS General Reading Task

  • 4 short pieces of increasing length and difficulty
  • General / everyday style texts
  • Workplace environment (job descriptions, employment contracts, etc.); general texts (newspapers, magazines, travel brochures, etc.)

You have one hour to complete the tests.

Time Management Tip:

Use 50 minutes for reading time, take notes if necessary, use the last 10 minutes to transfer your answers to your answer sheet / select your answers (computer-generated IELTS test).
